World Environmental Education Day: Talks, action, and commitment with Captain Denim

On January 26th , we celebrate World Environmental Education Day , a key date to reflect on how our choices can make a difference in caring for the planet. At Captain Denim , we not only make sustainable fashion, but we also believe in environmental education as a fundamental tool for change.

Last year, we had the opportunity to collaborate with Ideas Medioambientales , the consultancy that manages our carbon footprint, by giving awareness-raising talks to high schools in our region, Castilla-La Mancha . Today we want to share more about this experience and how environmental education can inspire new generations.

Talks at high schools: Raising awareness among young people

At Captain Denim, we believe that environmental education begins in the classroom. That's why, together with Ideas Medioambientales , we organize talks at local high schools , with the goal of empowering students and showing them how small actions can have a big impact on the environment.

What do we talk about in the talks?

  1. Carbon footprint: We explain what it is, how it is measured and how brands like Captain Denim work to reduce and offset it, as in the case of our Captain Denim Forest .
  2. Conscious Fashion: We reflect on the impact of fashion on the environment and how choosing brands with responsible processes can make a difference.
  3. Circular Economy: We present practical examples, such as the use of recycled cotton and how to give textile waste a second life.
  4. Individual Actions: We encourage young people to make small changes, such as reducing plastic consumption, saving water, and choosing long-lasting products.

These talks allowed us to connect with students, inspire them to reflect on their role in caring for the planet, and show them how fashion can be an ally of sustainability.

Environmental education and the conscious consumer

Environmental education isn't limited to the classroom. As consumers, we can also make more responsible choices and support environmentally conscious brands. Here are some key points:

  1. Transparency: Before buying, learn about the brands. Where and how do they produce? Do they use sustainable materials? At Captain Denim, we share all our processes so you know exactly what's behind each garment.
  2. Manufacturing processes: Choose locally made garments, like ours, to reduce your transportation footprint. Also, prioritize brands that use sustainable technologies, like our Dry Indigo dye, which saves 90% of water.
  3. Responsible materials: Look for clothing made with fabrics like organic or recycled cotton , which not only care for the planet but also for your skin.
  4. Conscious consumption: Before buying, review your closet and consider whether you really need that item. Opt for quality over quantity.

Recommendations: Learn and act for the planet

Environmental education is an ongoing process. To delve deeper into the topic and continue learning, here are some recommendations:

Documentaries

  • "Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things" (Netflix): Reflects on the impact of overconsumption and how we can live with less.
  • "The True Cost" (Prime Video): A look at the impact of fashion on the environment and people.
  • "Before the Flood" (Disney+): Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, it addresses the climate crisis and the actions needed to combat it.

Books

  • "No More Plastic" by Will McCallum: A practical guide to reducing your plastic consumption.
  • Bill Gates' "How to Avoid a Climate Disaster": An analysis of how we can reduce carbon emissions and build a sustainable future.
  • "Cradle to Cradle" by Michael Braungart and William McDonough: An approach to designing products and systems that respect the natural cycle.

Continued commitment to the planet

World Environmental Education Day reminds us that we can all be agents of change. At Captain Denim , we continue working to reduce our environmental impact, support environmental education, and offer you garments that not only look good but also respect the planet.

We invite you to explore more about our initiatives and commitments in our certificates section .

Because together, we can build a more conscious and sustainable future.
